The mythical river of Acherodas

Acherodas river springs from the mountains of Ioannina prefecture, passes through Thesprotia prefecture and the municipality of Acherodas and enters to Preveza prefecture, in the Ammoudia beach of the Ionian sea.

It is the mythical river that death was reaching with his boat to take the souls of the dead and get them to the underworld, kingdom of Adis. The mythical meaning of the river, the rocky mountains that surround it and its sweeping crystal clear waters in combination with the lush green vegetation covering its banks make it a wonderful place.
The river bank with its light blue waters is covered by dense aquatic vegetation such as plane trees and weeping willows. The gorge, the springs or the “Cave or Hole of the Spirit”, Dala stream which falls into the river, the half destroyed bridge and Soulio windmills are areas of unique natural beauty.
The river passes through a narrow and imposing gorge that is created by Paramithias and Souli mountains and is called “Acherodas Narrows”. It is a scenery of unique natural beauty with rare flora and fauna and is part of the European ecology network Natura 2000.
