Petrounias wins medal in Europeans

Lefteris Petrounias showed that there is more to Greek gymnastics than just the well-known Vlassis Maras and Lefteris Kosmidis by winning the bronze medal at the European Championship in Berlin on Saturday.

The Greek rings champion was only beaten by a pair of Russians, to finish third in the final with 15,675 points, the first international success in his career.

Petrounias had qualified as fourth to the final, but managed to get onto the podium thanks to a sequence that was particularly demanding (6.8).

This was only the first European championship for the 21-year-old, who is following on the footsteps of Olympian Dimosthenis Tambakos.
