Six arrested, one wanted, in contraband cigarettes haul

A total of six people were arrested and a large cache of contraband cigarettes was seized in a coordinated police operation late Monday near Epidaurus, in Argolida prefecture.

Police stopped and searched three trucks, bearing Greek, Bulgarian and Italian licence plates, and turned up 1,700 crates and 850,000 packets of contraband cigarettes.

The three truck drivers were arrested and the contraband cigarettes were seized.

An investigation revealed that the contraband had been unloaded from a freighter ship at a fish farm in Korakia, Kranidi. The fish farm's two Romanian guards and one of the two Greek owners were arrested, while the second owner is wanted.
