Eight charged for match-fixing profits

A Greek court charged eight people on Monday with violation of gambling law accusing them of betting on matches that they knew they had been fixed and obtaining significant gains.

Seven other suspects, who allegedly made more than 15,000 euros each, are under investigation and they may also get charged for fraud, once more evidence from the investigation of the 41 suspicious soccer matches is collected.

Judicial authorities aim to link the cases of the eight gamblers with the suspicious matches, as they investigate winning bets made in no fewer than 45 betting companies. Most of them are expected to submit details to the Greek authorities fairly soon.

It follows the UEFA report on suspicious games from the Greek Cup and the Greek second division of the last three seasons.
