High-jump champion Chondrokoukis wins Diamond League meeting
If Greek athletics has any hopes to get a medal in next year's Olympic Games, they rest on Dimitris Chondrokoukis, as the high jump champion won gold at the IAAF Diamond League meeting in Zurich on Thursday.
Chondrokoukis cleared 2.32 metres at the second attempt, to equal his personal record.
One week earlier he had finished fifth in the World Championship in Daegu, South Korea, again with a 2.32-m. jump.
He has therefore become the first Greek ever to win gold at the world's most prominent meeting, the Weltklasse, thereby earning $10,000.
Another Greek, the women's pole-vault champion Nicole Kyriakopoulou was to take part at the Weltklasse, too, but got injured in the warm-up.
