AEK's Burns surprised to join Socceroos

AEK striker Nathan Burns was called up by Australia to take part in the Asian Cup that is taking place this month.

Burns, who returned to AEK in the summer after a successful loan spell at Kerkyra, expressed his great joy at the news in an interview on Saturday.

“This is a great opportunity for me. It is a major honour for myself to be in the same squad as players like Harry Kewell, Tim Cahill and Mark Swartzer. I am ever so happy with this invitation,” said the 22-year-old Aussie.

He went on to express his surprise at being asked to join the Socceroos, but added that “I am excited with this opportunity”.

He explained his adjustment to the Greek game coming from Australia was not easy, but he is now reaping the benefits of that move.

“I had to earn my spot in the team and at first I found it hard. But I kept working on my game and improving as a player, so now I am enjoying the fruit of my work and play in every game,” Burns said.
