Merkel: An extension to Greek aid program is "on the table"

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that rescheduling the repayment of
Greece debts could be considered in the context of a comprehensive euro rescue package.

An extension to the "maturity" of the Greek rescue program is being discussed, Merkel said, talking about the time period of Greece’s bailout program. However, she didn’t mention the maturity of Greek government bonds speaking in a joint press conference with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou.

A possible extension to the Greek aid program is "on the table", Merkel said, but stressed that it is only one of several points being discussed as part of a "comprehensive package" to reform the euro zone.

Germany and France recently have proposed a competitiveness pact for the euro zone to be decided upon until late March, including stricter rules to bring down government deficits and debt.

"Many of the things that have been suggested in the Franco-German competitiveness pact, we have done already, or are implementing already," Greek Prime Minister said.

Papandreou stated at their joint conference in Berlin that there won΄t be a restructuring or "haircut" of Greek debt.
Greece is on track with its restructuring program, and won΄t be an additional burden to German tax payers, he added.

"We have taken a loan, and we will repay it with interest. For us, it΄s a question of credibility," Greek PM concluded.

Merkel said although much remains to be done in Greece, the country needs to continue with the restructuring program agreed upon, but without further measures.
