A strike per day!

Another week of great discomfort awaits passengers in Athens as the fight between the workers in public transport and the ministry of Infrastructure is escalating due to the bill for urban transport, the discussion on which will start on Wednesday in the relevant committee in Parliament.

The workers, during their meetings, decided on protests throughout the
week, each transportation mean on a different day.

Specifically, bus workers have agreed on the decision of their board and their pulling the handbrake on Tuesday-Wednesday for a 48hr strike. On Friday they will once again go on a work stoppage from 11am to 3:30pm while next Monday, February 11 they will meet once again, so the buses will stop from 11am to 4pm.

The workers at the electric rail decided on two 24hr strikes for Wednesday and Thursday and on Friday they will stop from 12 noon and demonstrate at the centre of Athens.

Trolleys will stop on Tuesday and Wednesday while on Friday workers will strike from 11am to 3pm.

Finally, metro workers decided on a 24hr strike for Tuesday which, although it was deemed illegal by the Administrative Court of Athens, according to union men will be carried out and safeguarded by themselves; therefore trains will not be able to move.

According to the strike schedule, only the electric rail will operate on Tuesday and all other means will remain stationary.

«It is clear that the government has the legislative initiative. We respect the workers but they will not legislate. They must leave the corporatist sectoral interests for the benefit of society. Nothing will go right if the workers don’t take responsible initiatives and fail to realize that the means of public transport are there to serve their passengers».

This message was sent by Dimitris Reppas to the union men reacting on the new bill of the ministry for the consolidation, restructuring and development of urban transport in the Region of Attica, the discussion on which has started on Monday at the relevant parliamentary committee.

From Tuesday, February 1 there will be new and increased prices – up to 80% – in urban transport tickets. OASA announced that older tickets can be used until Monday February 14. From February 15 until April 1, older tickets will be exchanged for new ones at the OASA offices, Metsovou 25, and the metro stations in Syntagma and Panepistimio.
