Greece's conservative opposition would welcome a cut in value-added tax (VAT) but this would not be enough to restart the economy and secure its support for further austerity measures, a party official told Reuters on Tuesday.
"If correct, it is a good step but not good enough, not sufficient to restart the economy," an official at the New Democracy party said on condition of anonymity.
"The corporate tax and personal income tax cuts we suggested would have more impact, less cost and no immediate cash flow impact," the official added.
A German coalition source told Reuters earlier that the Greek government and international lenders had agreed to lower VAT. The government is seeking consensus with the main opposition, which has set lower taxes as a precondition for supporting the government on further austerity measures.
