'Red tide' covers Thermaikos Bay

A reddish "blanket", known as the "red tide" phenomenon -- created by minute marine protozoans that are chief constituents of plankton -- has covered most of the Thermaikos Bay bordering Thessaloniki.

"The specific phenomenon appears every spring and autumn and lasts three-four weeks", Aristotle University of Thessaloniki chemistry professor Konstantinos Fitianos told ANA-MPA. Among the negative consequences of the phenomenon is an intense foul smell.
