Europa League: PAOK draw but AEK lose badly
PAOK saved the day for Greek soccer this week as it managed to snatch a 2-2 draw at Rubin Kazan for the Europa League on Thursday, while AEK surrendered a 1-0 lead at home to go down to Sturm Graz 2-1 in the same competition.
PAOK took a first-half lead through a Stefanos Athanasiadis goal in the 23rd minute, but a strong start by Rubin saw the Russian side go 2-1 ahead thanks to goals by Bebras Natcho and Vladimir Dyadyun.
Against the run of play, however, Giorgos Fotakis managed to equalise 10 minutes from time for PAOK to take its second point in its group after two games.
AEK took the lead five minutes into the second half with a goal by Jose Carlos that a Sturm defender headed into his own net, but the dismissal of Traianos Dellas a few minutes later shifted the balance of the match.
Thomas Burgstaller equalized for the Austrians in the 87th minute while Mario Haas’s goal in injury time gave Sturm a precious win.
