Man dies after fan clashes in Iraklio

A 21-year-old man was stabbed to death in the early hours of Monday in Iraklio during clashes of rival gangs loosely connected with local clubs OFI Crete and Irodotos as well as Panathinaikos, according to reports.

Some 30 men met at around 3 am close to the Pankritio Stadium and fought a fierce pitch battle that also left several of them injured (two of them seriously).

Police sources suggested that the young man killed, named Yiannis Roussakis, bore multiple stab wounds.

Local reports suggested that the two rival gangs of 15 men each had set a deadly rendez-vous, one gang coming from the centre of Iraklio - the fan base of OFI - and the other from Nea Alikarnassos, whose local club is Irodotos, a fourth-division side. However, the locals also spoke of a Panathinaikos fan club affiliation for the latter gang.

Police have reportedly arrested four people in connection with the incident, while there are genuine fears of retaliation in the Cretan capital.

The news comes just a few days after fierce clashes between Olympiakos and Panathinaikos fans in the Athens district of Petralona that left two men seriously injured last week.
