PM: "The time has come to rely on our own powers"

Prime Minister George Papandreou on Friday underlined that "now is the time to rely on our own powers and lay the foundations necessary that will allow us to become a productive country".

Speaking at a meeting with local authorities in the northwestern city of Arta, he emphasized that the country avoided default after the recent decisions in the Eurozone Summit meeting and underlined that the considerable deficit reduction is not enough because "even if the entire debt were erased, we would still have a problem, because we wouldn't be able to meet current expenditures without resorting to new loans".

The prime minister stressed that the government's priority is to promote the necessary reforms and implement the new developmental model.

"Agriculture is a comparative advantage for Greece and the sector of farming products should develop," he said, adding that the province of Epirus (NW Greece) has great potential for investments in quality products.
