Opinion polls on Evros fence, economic measures, voter preference

Three opinion polls appearing in Sunday newspapers indicated that a large proportion of the public favors the construction of a fence along a section of Greece's border with Turkey in Evros, prefer ruling Pasok over main opposition ND, and are pessimistic of the new year that just started.

According to a MARC opinion poll, the results of which appeared in the Sunday edition of Ethnos newspaper, 80.3 percent of the respondents agree with the placement of the fence in Evros, while nine in ten of the respondents identifying themselves as Pasok and ND voters believe that a "sweep operation" should be made in central Athens.

Also, 65 percent of the respondents replied in the affirmative that the reforms being advanced by the government in the wider public sector and to labour relations and for the opening of the closed-shop professions "are unfortunately mandatory and must be implemented", whereas 30.2 percent felt that the reforms "must be obstructed with strikes and mass demonstrations".

With regard to voter intent (what party they would vote for if elections were to be held the following Sunday), 27.7 percent of the respondents opted for Pasok, 20.9 percent for ND, 7.8 percent for the Communist Party of Greece (KKE), 4.8 percent for Popular Orthodox Rally (Laos), and 3 percent for the Coalition of the Left, Movements and Ecology (Syn), followed by the non-parliamentary parties Democratic Alliance (2.8 percent), Democratic Left (2.2 percent) and the Ecologists-Greens (2.0 percent), while four percent preferred other, smaller, parties, 8.7 percent were undecided, and 16 percent opted for abstention or a blank vote.

Further, an overwhelming 81.2 percent were in favour of the present government completing its 4-year term in office, while 15.8 percent felt it would be better for the country if early general elections were held this year.

In a second opinion poll, conducted by ALCO and appearing in Proto Thema newspaper on Sunday, 73 percent of the respondents agree with the construction of the fence in Evros while 18 percent disagree.

Also, 75 percent of the respondents reject new measures for the country to exit the crisis, while 63 percent consider the government's decision to open the closed professions to be correct, against 20 percent who oppose it.

Further, 71 percent of the respondents were critical of government vice-president Theodoros Pangalos' attitude and feel it is incompatible with the image of prime minister George Papandreou's governance.

As for voter intent, 22 percent of the respondents prefer Pasok against 18.4 percent for ND, 8.0 percent for the KKE, 5.3 percent for Laos, 2.5 percent for the Coalition of the Radical Left (Syriza, the SYN-led parliamentary alliance), 2.6 percent for Democratic Alliance, 1.9 percent for Democratic Left, 2.7 percent for the Ecologists-Greens, and 4.7 percent for other, smaller, parties, while 8.4 percent were undecided, 14.4 percent were in favour of abstention, and 8.9 percent opted for blank or invalid votes.
