Iakovos Kampanelis dies, aged 89

Iakovos Kampanelis died on Tuesday afternoon, at the age of
 89, while he was hospitalized in ICU with kidney failure.


Kampanelis was entitled 'the Father of the Greek modern theater' and has left behind a rich theatrical work, which essentially founded the Greek modern theater.


He also authored at least 12 films and he directed two of them. His most famous film scenario was 'Stella' directed by Mihalis Cacoyiannis starring Melina Merkouri.  


Ηis plays have been translated and acted in England, Austria, Germany, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria and Sweden.


Kampanelis was born on Naxos in 1922. He moved with his family to Athens in 1935. During the Nazi occupation he joined the Greek Ressistance and he was jailed by the Germans in 1943. 


He was married with the actress Tania Savvopoulou.
