Katsouranis criticises football officials

Euro-2004 winner Costas Katsouranis grabbed the opportunity of Greece's 1-0 victory in Israel, to voice his criticism at the country's football officials, referring to both the authorities and the club officials.

"Football officials are trying to bury Greek football, while the footballers are trying to keep it high," said Katsouranis, who played the full 90 minutes in Tel Aviv.

The match-fixing scandal has obviously annoyed Greek players, too, but they have had little chance of voicing their thoughts.

It was Katsouranis's goal for Panathinaikos that was unfairly disallowed in the derby with Olympiakos in Piraeus in February. Had that counted, the title may well have not gone to Olympiakos.

The match-fixing tapes contained a dialogue between Olympiakos president Vangelis Marinakis and the then owner of Olympiakos Volou Achilleas Beos, in which Beos tells Marinakis he should make sure the refereee and his assistant in that game have a couple of bodyguards for a few days.

Katsouranis has always been one of the most vocal players of the national team, and his comments are expected to reverberate across the local game.

On Friday he played an integral part in Greece's dominance in the midfield, and on his way out of the dressing rooms he stated that the national team was in a great condition on the day.

"For about 70-75 we played a good game and this gives us huge confidence for the Latvia game. We want and can qualify to the Euro, but we still have three games to play."

He received his second booking in the campaign, so he will miss the match at Riga. In his statements Katsouranis confirmed that the scorer Sotiris Ninis, who was substituted at Tel Aviv, will also miss the game in Latvia through after suffering a leg injury.

"We always have selection problems and for the Tuesday game we have twice as many problems, but we know that everyone will do their best. Ninis is injured and will certainly miss the game in Latvia," said Katsouranis.

Manager Fernando Santos urged caution ahead of the game against Latvia, to make Friday's victory meaningful.

"The last few minutes were difficult but we managed to hold on to victory. Our win will have no significance unless we also win at Latvia on Tuesday, said Santos.
